Cats may suddenly wake up during sleep due to wild instincts, transitions into REM sleep, environmental stimuli, pain, or cognitive dysfunction associated with aging. If these episodes occur repeatedly or resemble seizures, immediate veterinary care is necessary.

| Item | Normal | Watch Closely | Seek Care Immediately |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frequency | 2–3 times a week | 1–2 times a day | Repeatedly several times a day |
| Duration | 10 seconds–1 minute | 5–10 minutes | 10 minutes or more, or seizure-like |
| Behavior | Just opens eyes and goes back to sleep | Looks around briefly | Howling, convulsions, incontinence |
| Recovery | Recovers naturally | Calms down when soothed | Does not calm even when soothed |
If accompanied by seizures, incontinence, or difficulty standing, emergency care is needed immediately.

When to Seek Immediate Veterinary Care
This isn’t just a brief moment of alertness; it’s a sign that a neurological issue may be at play. If your cat suddenly wakes up, stares fixedly at one spot, becomes rigid, trembles, drools, or remains dazed and unsteady even after waking, you should consider the possibility of seizures or intracranial disease. In fact, intracranial tumors can alter a cat’s sleep patterns, and pinpointing the exact location of the lesion requires a neurological evaluation, such as a cranial nerve exam. If clear neurological signs are present—such as a rigid, extended posture with all four limbs stiff—or if the same episode repeats two or more times within 24 hours, seek veterinary care on the same day.

Extra Care for Senior Cats
Nighttime vocalization and sudden awakenings in cats aged 10 and older may not simply be signs of aging, but could indicate cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS), hyperthyroidism, or hypertension. Regular health check-ups every six months to a year, along with video recordings of behavioral changes to share with your veterinarian, can greatly assist in diagnosis.
