When to Deworm Puppies for Roundworms: A Guide to Timing and Medication Selection

Infection/ParasitesQ&AMeongsiljang Veterinary Advisory Board

Roundworms are a common internal parasite that live in the small intestine of puppies. Since almost all puppies are born infected through the placenta or mother's milk, regular deworming is essential starting from two weeks of age.

What Kind of Parasite Are Roundworms in Puppies?

Puppies staying with their mother dog
Toxocara canis, commonly known as roundworms, is a prevalent internal parasite that inhabits the small intestine of young puppies, causing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and stunted growth. Crucially, regular deworming is essential starting from just two weeks of age. Since nearly all puppies are either born infected via the placenta or contract the parasite through their mother’s milk, medication must be administered on schedule regardless of fecal test results. Additionally, because these parasites can be transmitted to humans—especially children—careful household hygiene is equally important.

Why Are Almost All Puppies Infected with Roundworms?

Roundworm larvae lie dormant in the mother dog’s body, primarily in her muscles and liver, until late in pregnancy when they become active. Once activated, these larvae are transmitted directly to the fetuses through the placenta and, after birth, to the puppies through the mother’s milk. As a result, even if the mother appears healthy at the time of delivery, the puppies are often born already infected. Additionally, puppies can ingest roundworm eggs by licking soil or coming into contact with the feces of other dogs. Because reinfection is easy, a single deworming treatment is not enough to fully address the issue.

Deworming Schedule by Puppy Age

ItemRecommended dewormingNotes
2 weeks of age1st dewormingMainly roundworms; pyrantel recommended
4 weeks of age2nd dewormingRoundworm re-deworming
6 weeks of age3rd dewormingRoundworms + consider starting heartworm prevention
8 weeks of age4th deworming + fecal examTogether with the 1st vaccination
3–6 months of ageMonthly dewormingCan switch to a broad-spectrum dewormer

The exact schedule is adjusted by the attending veterinarian according to the puppy's health status and environment.

Four Commonly Used Deworming Medications for Roundworms

Different types of dewormers for roundworms have varying spectrums of activity. For puppies, pyrantel pamoate, which has proven safety, is most commonly prescribed. The choice of medication and timing of administration should be determined by a veterinarian based on the puppy's weight, age, and potential exposure to other parasites. It is dangerous for pet owners to arbitrarily crush and administer human or large-animal dewormers found online.

Can Be Transmitted to Humans — Extra Caution for Households with Children

Roundworm eggs from dogs can be transmitted to humans, especially infants and toddlers who touch soil and then put their hands in their mouths. Inside the human body, the larvae migrate through tissues, causing two main types of larva migrans. One is ocular larva migrans, where the larvae migrate to the eye; this is actually reported more frequently in humans than in dogs and can lead to uveitis, vision loss, and even blindness. At least 750 cases are reported annually in the United States alone. The other is visceral larva migrans, which affects the liver or central nervous system and is more common in children aged 2 to 7 years. In households with babies or young children, it is essential to promptly clean up feces and thoroughly wash any hands that have been licked by a dog with soap. Sandboxes and garden soil pose a risk because dog feces may remain there for extended periods.

Five Home Management Tips to Prevent Reinfection

Deworming alone isn’t enough. Roundworm eggs have thick shells that allow them to survive in soil, grass, and on floors for months to years, and they resist environmental exposure and disinfectants. - Dispose of feces immediately: Pick up waste within 30 minutes after walks or elimination. - Wipe paws after play: Clean your dog’s paws and the area around the anus after walks on soil or grass. - Separate shared bowls: In multi-dog households, regularly wash food and water bowls with boiling water. - Maintain gardens and lawns: Roundworm eggs can survive in soil for years and are resistant to common disinfectants. Rather than relying on chemicals, promptly remove feces and limit your dog’s and children’s access to contaminated soil or sand. - Deworm pregnant and nursing dogs: Start managing the mother before giving birth to reduce the risk of infection in newborn puppies.

Why Fecal Exams Are Necessary Even After Deworming

A single dewormer won’t eliminate all types of parasites. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s puppy wellness guidelines recommend performing a separate fecal exam on puppies, even if they’ve already been dewormed. This is because pyrantel is ineffective against whipworms and tapeworms, and some roundworm strains may exhibit drug resistance. It’s most efficient to conduct the fecal exam at the same time as the first vaccination, typically around 8 weeks of age.

Frequently Asked Questions

My puppy passed something that looked like white noodles in its stool. Could it be roundworms?
If you see long, white worms that resemble spaghetti noodles, it’s likely roundworms. Take a photo of the stool or collect a sample in a bag and bring it to your nearest veterinary clinic for a fecal examination.
Is it normal to still see roundworms in my pet’s stool the day after giving dewormer?
That’s normal. As the medication paralyzes and expels roundworms, some dead or weakened worms may pass in your pet’s stool over several days. However, if you continue to see them after a week, a follow-up dose may be necessary.
If the mother dog has been dewormed, do the puppies still need to be dewormed?
Even if the mother is dewormed, it won’t prevent larvae that have already crossed the placenta or entered her milk from reaching the puppies. Therefore, puppies must be dewormed separately from their mother, starting at two weeks of age and continuing on a regular schedule.
How often should adult dogs be dewormed for roundworms?
While the ideal frequency depends on your dog’s walking environment and how often they come into contact with other dogs, we generally recommend monthly treatment, or at least once every three months. Using a broad-spectrum dewormer that also prevents heartworm disease allows you to manage both concerns in a single dose.
Is it safe to give human deworming medication (such as albendazole) to dogs?
Absolutely not. The dosage per body weight and safety range differ significantly. You must use veterinary dewormers at the dosage prescribed by a veterinarian.
