5 Flea and Tick Preventives for Cats Recommended by Veterinarians — Ingredient Safety Comparison

Infection/ParasitesTop PicksMeongsiljang Veterinary Advisory Board

We’ve compared five flea and tick preventives that are safe for cats. We avoided ingredients lethal to cats, such as permethrin, and focused on proven active ingredients like fipronil, selamectin, and fluralaner.

What Are Flea and Tick Preventives for Cats?

Flea and tick preventatives for cats are veterinary medicines designed to block or kill external parasites—such as fleas, ticks, and mites—from attaching to and feeding on your cat. The most critical factor is choosing products with ingredients that are safe for cats. Pyrethroid-based ingredients like permethrin, commonly found in dog products, can cause severe neurotoxicity in cats and may even be fatal. Therefore, all five products featured in this list are either exclusively formulated for cats or explicitly approved for feline use.

Why Is Tick Prevention Essential for Cats?

Even indoor cats can bring fleas and ticks into the home on their owner’s clothes and shoes or through contact with a cohabiting dog. Fleas cause itching and allergic dermatitis, and in kittens, persistent blood-feeding can lead to anemia. Depending on the species, ticks can transmit vector-borne diseases such as babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and Lyme disease. With the rise in travel and pet movement, the risk of exposure to these ticks and pathogens is increasing. Additionally, because cats groom themselves frequently, they may further irritate their skin while trying to remove attached ticks. Therefore, year-round, consistent prevention is recommended not only for cats that go outdoors but also for strictly indoor cats.

Ingredients to Absolutely Avoid — Permethrin

Common pyrethroid ingredients in dog flea and tick medications, such as permethrin and deltamethrin, are lethal to cats. Cats lack the liver enzymes (glucuronidation) needed to break down these compounds, which can lead to tremors, seizures, hyperthermia, and even death. If a cat is accidentally treated with a dog product or grooms a dog that has been treated, seek immediate veterinary care. Always check the label for "for cats" before purchasing.

How We Selected the Top 5

We selected products based on four criteria: - Cat safety: No pyrethroids. - Proven efficacy: Ingredients with clinically demonstrated effectiveness against adult fleas, eggs, larvae, or ticks. - Convenience: Spot-on or oral administration, and duration of effect per dose. - Prescription accessibility in Korea: Products available at veterinary clinics and pet pharmacies. All products assume a veterinary consultation for the initial prescription.

Top 1 & 2 — Broad Coverage Is the Key Strength

- No. 1 Bravecto Plus (for cats): The active ingredient fluralaner provides 12 weeks of protection against fleas and ticks, while moxidectin prevents heartworm, roundworms, and hookworms. Its greatest advantage is the convenience of lasting three months with just one application. - No. 2 Revolution Plus: This combination of selamectin and sarolaner covers ticks, fleas, heartworms, and ear mites. Although it requires monthly application, it is a best-seller with the most extensive clinical data.

Top 3, 4 & 5 — Options for Different Situations

- 3rd Place: Frontline Plus (for Cats): Contains fipronil and (S)-methoprene. The inclusion of an insect growth regulator (IGR) that targets flea eggs and larvae makes it highly effective at eliminating fleas in the environment. - 4th Place: Advocate (for Cats): Contains imidacloprid and moxidectin. While its efficacy against ticks is limited, it is highly effective against fleas, heartworm, ear mites, and internal parasites, making it ideal for indoor cats with minimal tick exposure. - 5th Place: NexGard Combo: Its key differentiator is the combination of esafoxolaner, eprinomectin, and praziquantel, which provides comprehensive coverage including tapeworms in a single dose.

Important Points to Follow When Using

Spot-on treatments must be applied directly to the skin between the shoulder blades at the back of the neck to be effective. If the product is applied to the fur, it will not be absorbed properly. Avoid bathing or allowing your pet to swim for 24 to 48 hours after application. If you have a dog in the same household and have applied a permethrin-containing product to it, keep the animals separated until the product has dried and prevent the cat from licking the dog. For kittens under 8–9 weeks of age or weighing less than 1 kg, as well as pregnant or nursing cats, always consult your veterinarian to confirm whether the medication is appropriate for use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I apply flea and tick medication to my indoor-only cat?
Yes, it’s recommended. Fleas and ticks can be brought in on your clothes, shoes, or other dogs in the household. Once they get inside, they can breed in carpets and sofas, making them difficult to eradicate. Monthly or 12-week preventive treatments are the most cost-effective approach.
Can I use a dog’s tick medication on my cat?
Absolutely not. In particular, pyrethroid-based ingredients such as permethrin and deltamethrin are neurotoxic to cats and can cause tremors, seizures, and even death. Always use only products specifically labeled for cats.
Which is better, spot-on or oral medication?
Cats often find pill administration difficult, so spot-on treatments are commonly used. If you have multiple cats and are concerned about them grooming each other, keep them separated until the application site is dry, or consult your veterinarian about oral medication options depending on the situation.
I applied the preventive medication, but my pet still got ticks. Does that mean it’s not working?
Spot-on treatments don’t instantly repel ticks; instead, they kill the tick within a certain period after it starts feeding. It’s normal for the tick to detach within 24 to 48 hours. If it’s still alive after a few days, please contact your veterinarian.
Can I use multiple medications together?
Using multiple products with overlapping ingredients can lead to dangerous overexposure. It’s safer to use a single combination product that protects against fleas, ticks, heartworm, and internal parasites—such as Bravecto Plus, Revolution Plus, or NexGard Combo.
