The level of evidence for each ingredient's efficacy may vary across veterinary literature. Recommended dosages vary by product label and individual body weight, so always decide after consulting a veterinarian.

Key Points to Check When Choosing a Supplement
Always verify that the ingredient amounts are appropriate for your pet’s body weight. You can trust a product only if its label clearly lists the content of each ingredient in milligrams. Avoid products that obscure individual amounts with vague claims like “500 mg of combined ingredients.” Additionally, pets with diabetes should consult their veterinarian before taking glucosamine, and those prone to bleeding should seek veterinary advice before starting omega-3 fatty acids or chondroitin.

Caution for Breeds with Drug Sensitivity Genes
Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs, Australian Shepherds, and similar breeds often carry the MDR1 (ABCB1) gene mutation. This mutation impairs the function of P-glycoprotein in the blood-brain barrier, increasing the risk of neurotoxicity from certain medications, as documented in veterinary literature. While the direct link between joint supplement ingredients and the MDR1 mutation has not yet been fully studied, it is advisable to start with a small dose when introducing a new supplement. If you observe any adverse symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy, discontinue use immediately and consult your veterinarian.
