Pet Hotel Rating Comparison Guide — From Premium to Basic

ImmunityComparisonsMeongsiljang Veterinary Advisory Board

Pet hotel ratings are categorized based on space, care, and hygiene standards. We’ve outlined the differences between each rating and how to choose the best option for your furry friend.

What Are Pet Hotel Ratings?

Pet hotel tiers are categorized into Premium, Standard, and Basic based on factors such as space size, care frequency, hygiene management, and emergency response capabilities. What truly matters is selecting the tier that best suits your pet’s condition, rather than focusing solely on price. Senior dogs or pets with chronic conditions should be placed in Premium-tier accommodations or higher, while healthy adult dogs are generally well-served by Standard-tier options. Understanding the differences between tiers helps prevent both overspending and inadequate care.

Four Key Criteria for Rating Classification

Hotel ratings are determined by four key factors: - Space: Cages under 3.3 square meters versus private rooms. - Care frequency: Two walks and play sessions per day versus four or more. - Hygiene: Standard cleaning versus daily disinfection and air purification. - Emergency response: Whether 24-hour monitoring and veterinary support are provided. If any one of these four elements is missing, the rating drops. A stylish interior alone does not make a hotel premium.

Premium Hotels — Which Pets Need Them?

Premium boarding facilities are characterized by 24-hour on-site staff, private accommodations, and immediate access to veterinary care. We recommend these services for the following pets: - Senior dogs and cats: Immediate response is available in case of sudden changes in condition. - Pets with chronic conditions: Those requiring regular medication for diabetes, heart disease, or similar conditions. - Pets with severe separation anxiety: One-on-one care minimizes stress. - Large-breed dogs: Spacious environments that allow for adequate exercise. Rather than viewing this as simply a one-night stay fee, consider it an investment in a medical safety net.

Standard Hotels — The Most Balanced Choice

The Standard tier is ideal for healthy adult dogs and cats. It includes basic care such as individual housing, two to three walks per day, and access to CCTV monitoring. We have agreements with nearby veterinary clinics to handle emergencies. Due to its cost-effectiveness, it’s commonly used for short-term stays of one to three days during travel or business trips. However, since there’s no 24-hour on-site staff, we recommend avoiding this option for pets that may require nighttime emergency care.

Hygiene Standards to Always Verify, Regardless of Rating

No matter the facility’s rating, always verify these four essentials. First, check whether they require proof of vaccination against infectious diseases—places that don’t are risky. Second, confirm their disinfection schedule for the premises; thorough cleaning before and after each stay is a basic standard. Third, evaluate the ventilation system, as poorly ventilated, enclosed spaces significantly increase the risk of respiratory disease transmission. Fourth, ensure there is a designated isolation area to separate any pets showing signs of illness. These four factors are more important than any facility rating.

Checklist Before Choosing a Rating

Review each of the following points one by one. - Boarding duration: For stays of 3 days or longer, we recommend the Standard tier or higher. - Pet’s age: If your pet is 7 years or older, consider the Premium tier. - Chronic conditions: The Premium tier is required if medication administration is needed. - Temperament: For pets with separation anxiety or who are easily frightened, choose a tier that provides a private, independent space. - Budget: Evaluate the proportion of boarding costs relative to potential medical expenses. The most expensive hotel isn’t always the right choice. The key is selecting the option that best fits your pet’s specific needs.

Avoid These Hotels Regardless of Rating

Avoid any breeder or facility that displays any of the following red flags, regardless of their advertised rating: refusal to provide vaccination records, refusal to allow real-time CCTV viewing, refusal to permit visits or pre-purchase inspections, being unreachable for 24 hours or more, and refusal to provide a written statement outlining liability in case of accidents. If any of these apply, the actual standard of care is likely below basic, even if they advertise a high rating. Be sure to carefully review the contract and terms and conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the hotel rating an officially certified system?
No, there is no official government certification yet; it’s an industry-led self-regulatory classification. So don’t rely solely on the grade name—always verify the actual facilities and operational standards yourself.
My dog is a senior. Is it okay to leave him in the standard boarding facility?
We don’t recommend it. If your pet’s condition changes suddenly, you won’t be able to respond quickly, which can be dangerous. For pets aged 7 or older, or those with underlying health conditions, we recommend at least the Standard formula, and ideally the Premium one.
Do the same grade standards apply to cats as well?
While the basic structure is similar, cats are more prone to territorial stress, so having a dedicated space is even more important for them. Avoid basic shared-space models and opt for a cat-specific standard model or higher.
Even for a short one-night stay, is a premium option really necessary?
For a healthy puppy, a standard one- or two-night stay is usually sufficient. However, if it’s your first time leaving your pup in care or if they suffer from severe separation anxiety, opting for the premium service—even for a short stay—is the safer choice.
Does the compensation vary depending on the severity grade when an accident occurs?
It depends on the compensation clauses in the contract, not on any grading system. Before making a reservation, be sure to confirm in writing the scope of compensation, whether insurance is in place, and the liability limits.
