A cat’s paw pads have a thin stratum corneum, making them prone to dryness and cracking. We’ve compared five moisturizing balms that pet owners can safely use, evaluating them based on ingredients, safety if licked, and price.

When to See a Vet Instead of Using Moisturizing Balm
It may not be simple dryness but a medical condition. If you notice the following signs, avoid self-treating with moisturizing products and seek veterinary care instead. Plasma cell pododermatitis is a paw pad condition in cats characterized by swelling and a puffy, cushion-like appearance of one or more paw pads, which can progress to ulceration in severe cases. This condition cannot be resolved with moisturizing creams; diagnosis must be confirmed through cytology or histopathology, followed by veterinary treatment. Seek immediate veterinary care if you see discharge or pus in cracks or if your pet limps when walking.

Products to Avoid — What You Must Steer Clear Of
Never use dog paw balms on cats. Dog products often contain essential oils like tea tree, lavender, and peppermint, which can be toxic to cats because their livers lack the enzymes needed to break down phenolic compounds, even in small amounts. Human hand creams containing urea or salicylic acid can also cause gastrointestinal irritation and loss of appetite if licked by cats. Always look for products specifically labeled "for cats only."
