Kidney supplements for dogs are given as a supportive aid to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease and reduce the burden on the kidneys. We’ve compared and summarized the five key ingredients: omega-3, azodyl, coenzyme Q10, B vitamins, and probiotics.

| Item | Omega-3 (EPA·DHA) | Azodyl | Coenzyme Q10 | B-vitamin complex | Probiotics |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main role | Reduces glomerular inflammation, improves intrarenal blood flow, decreases proteinuria (UPC) | Adjunctive support via gut environment management (renal evidence is limited) | Supports cellular metabolism and antioxidant activity (kidney-specific evidence is limited) | Supplements water-soluble vitamins lost in urine | Supports gut health (renal evidence is limited) |
| Evidence level | ⭐⭐⭐ High | ⭐ Adjunctive (limited evidence) | ⭐ Adjunctive (limited evidence) | ⭐⭐ Moderate (limited to some patients) | ⭐ Adjunctive |
| Recommended stage | All stages 1–4 | Stages 2–4 | Senior dogs, stages 1–3 | Stages 2–4 | All stages |
| Administration form | Liquid, capsule | Capsule | Capsule, powder | Powder, capsule | Powder |
| Precautions | Beware of rancidity, refrigerate | Give on an empty stomach, separate from other medications | Fat-soluble, give after meals | Beware of overdosing | Space apart from antibiotics |
Omega-3, phosphorus (P) restriction, and water-soluble vitamin supplementation are items with textbook evidence. The renal-protective effects of Azodyl, Coenzyme Q10, and probiotics are not confirmed by the available evidence alone, so they are marked as 'adjunctive.' Application may vary depending on the individual animal's condition, so consult your veterinarian.

Important Checks Before Feeding Supplements
For pets with significantly elevated kidney values (IRIS stages 3–4), adding supplements without veterinary guidance can place additional strain on the kidneys. This is especially true for comprehensive supplements high in phosphorus, high-dose vitamin D products, and calcium-fortified items, which can further burden renal function. Please consult your veterinarian before introducing any supplements other than prescribed renal diets.

Visit the Vet Immediately If You See These Signs
Even while your pet is taking kidney supplements, if you notice any of the following symptoms, the condition has progressed beyond what supplements alone can manage. You should visit an animal hospital within 24 hours. - Water intake more than double the normal amount for over 24 hours - A sudden decrease in urine output or complete absence of urination - Repeated vomiting and complete loss of appetite - Pale gums or an ammonia-like odor from the mouth - Sudden lethargy or difficulty standing
