Hydrolyzed prescription diets are specifically formulated for food allergies, breaking down proteins into tiny fragments of less than 10,000 Daltons (Da) so the immune system doesn’t recognize them as allergens. The key point is that these are fundamentally different in efficacy from the “low-allergy” foods you might find at regular pet stores.

Consult Your Veterinarian Before Starting a Prescription Diet
Hydrolyzed prescription diets are medical foods intended for diagnosis and treatment, so starting them without veterinary guidance can invalidate the dietary elimination trial. In fact, the only reliable way to definitively diagnose a food allergy is through a dietary elimination trial; blood tests (such as serum IgE testing) alone are insufficient for a definitive diagnosis and should not be used as the sole basis for diagnosis. Feeding a single, strict elimination diet is the diagnostic standard. During the trial, you must eliminate all treats, chews, flavored toothpaste, supplements, palatable medications, and even food used to mask pills. Even a single crumb of food dropped by family members or scavenged by your pet can compromise the trial results.

7–10 Day Gradual Transition Feeding Method
When switching to a hydrolyzed prescription diet, transition gradually over 7 to 10 days by mixing the new food with the current diet. For days 1–3, feed 75% of the current food and 25% of the prescription diet; for days 4–6, use a 50:50 ratio; for days 7–9, switch to 25% current food and 75% prescription diet; and on day 10, feed 100% prescription diet. During the dietary trial period (a minimum of 8 weeks), discontinue all treats, chews, flavored toothpaste, supplements, and palatable medications other than the prescription diet. If any non-prescription items are given, even once, the trial must be restarted from the beginning to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
