If you want to keep an eye on your pet while you’re out, a pet camera is a must-have. We’ve compared the top five models based on image quality, two-way audio, and AI detection features as of 2026.

Essential Checks Before Purchase
Pet cameras are security devices. Some low-cost Chinese models have been reported to leak video data as it passes through external servers. Be sure to verify that the product uses personal information encryption (AES-128 or higher) and holds domestic certification (KC), and use an app that supports two-factor authentication whenever possible. Since many models only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, you should also check your router’s frequency band.

If You Suspect Separation Anxiety, a Camera Alone Isn't Enough
If your pet camera shows excessive barking, destructive behaviors like chewing furniture, or repeated indoor accidents only when your pet is alone, these could be signs of separation-related issues (separation anxiety). You might also notice them pacing or appearing restless in the same spot. However, these behaviors can also stem from other causes, such as boredom or lack of environmental stimulation, so it’s important to determine whether true separation anxiety is present. According to veterinary behavior textbooks, separation-related issues often have complex causes and are difficult to resolve with training alone. Addressing the root cause, managing the environment, and fostering independence are essential, and in severe cases, medication (e.g., fluoxetine) prescribed by a behavior-specialized veterinarian may be necessary. Cats are less commonly reported to have separation-related issues than dogs, and their signs tend to be more subtle and easily overlooked, so pay close attention to their usual behavior. Consider bringing video recordings to consult with a veterinarian or a veterinary behavior specialist.
