We compared five kidney supplements for cats with chronic kidney disease, focusing on phosphorus binders, omega-3 fatty acids, and other renal-supporting ingredients. We also outlined key selection criteria and feeding precautions that pet owners should be aware of.

Check These Before Selecting a Supplement
Kidney supplements should only be selected after confirming the stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD) through blood and urine tests. If phosphorus levels are normal, administering a phosphorus binder prematurely can disrupt calcium balance. Additionally, if your pet is already on a prescription renal diet, the phosphorus binder may overlap with the diet’s effects, so always consult your veterinarian first.

Visit the Vet Immediately If You See These Signs
Even while your pet is taking nutritional supplements, you should visit a veterinary clinic within 24 hours if you notice any of the following signs: vomiting two or more times in a day, refusal to eat or drink for more than 24 hours, rapid breathing or an ammonia-like odor from the mouth, or sudden inability to stand. These symptoms may indicate emergency conditions such as uremia or hyperkalemia.
